So remember last week when I was looking at 1990 and claimed that Goodfellas was a juggernaut that was ONLY approached by The Shawshank Redemption? Yes, well, I probably should have looked at the actual numbers before saying that because as it turns out there were actually three films that came close, as Fargo (1996) tied Shawshank for 2nd place overall and Silence Of The Lambs, from right here in 1991, was hot on their tails. With 9 first place votes out of 13, Silence actually tied Fargo for the second most behind Goodfellas’ 11. In fact, were it not for Lisa’s 9 vote Silence might have taken second place overall with only 2 seconds and 1 third holding it back. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Either way it was still enough to have Silence win the year by a hefty margin. The remaining first place votes went to Terminator 2: Judgement Day (Glenn and myself), Boyz N The Hood (Lisa), and Beauty And The Beast (Michelle). That last vote also gave us our first example (of several to come over the years) of a film receiving both a 1st place vote and a last place vote (Bill slotting it at #20). For that matter, B&TB’s votes were all over the map, with a final tally of: 4, 2, 20, 11, 10, 5, 16, 18, 17, 2, 11, 1, 8.

T2 settled nicely into second place for the year with most of its votes landing within the top 5, the only real outliers being Lisa’s 11 and Kristin’s 12. Cape Fear meanwhile climbed all the way to #3 without the benefit of a 1st place vote thanks in part to landing inside of everybody’s top 10, with only me and Adam dropping it as low as 10th. Thelma & Louise on the other hand split its votes pretty cleanly, with 7 inside the top 5 and the other 6 all coming in 8th or lower. For what it’s worth, three of our four lady players slotted it at #3 for the year (Michelle let it drop to 8th) while two dudes (Jon & Mark) gave the film its high grade of 2nd.

As with 1990, every film received at least one top 10 vote, although this time around it seemed like a few people were the main culprits. Sleeping With The Enemy earns the distinction of the lowest “high” this year, earning an 8th place vote from Kristen, who also gave Point Break its lone break with a 6th placer. Meanwhile, Bill’s 7 propped up Backdraft, while Lisa’s 4 gave New Jack City its only real push as the next highest votes were a pair of 11’s from Bill & Fish. Holding up the bottom of the year were a pair of films that owe the fact that they weren’t shut out of the top 10 to Glenn, thanks to his 6 for Hook (next highest was Bill’s 12) and his 7 for Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (followed by Kristen’s 13). Robin Hood also wraps up the award for most last place votes with 5, proving once and for all that Costner’s horrible accent work just can’t be overlooked by some.

Turning to the draft portion, the two big losers were me and Lisa, who hooked our horses to Hot Shots! and New Jack City respectively, despite neither landing in the year’s top 13 when it all shook out. Given Lisa’s 4 vote for New Jack, her choice makes sense and is just another case of her often being an outlier with her rankings. I, on the other hand, dropped the ball big time by passing up the 7th overall film of the year (City Slickers) for the 14th (Hot Shots!). Mind you, I had Hot Shots! ranked 4th and City Slickers 5th, so my reasoning was sound in the moment, but clearly I misread the room on that one. The only other reach was Bill’s selection of The Doors 116th overall in the draft when it wound up ranked 195th among all the films ranked. Adam taking Thelma & Louise (drafted 53rd, ranked 73rd) while Cape Fear (ranked 48th) was still on the board is this week’s reminder that he could have won had he just made that ONE smart pick, but I can’t really slam him given he had T&L 3rd while being the low vote on Cape Fear. Still though, dude…

There were no real bargains for this year, with Fish reaping the benefit of 40 slots by taking Barton Fink at #196 (it finished 146), Andy nabbing JFK 32 slots higher than its final resting place (109), and Kristin somewhat lucking into 30 free (less) points by sweeping up Naked Gun 2 ½ as the final film taken for the year.

Final rankings for the year were as follows (including total points overall):

FINAL RANKING
1. The Silence Of The Lambs (25)
2. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (55)
3. Cape Fear (82)
4. Boyz N The Hood (94)
