Hollywood Fantasy Draft – Version 2

The second annual Hollywood Fantasy Draft has come and gone and another successful afternoon of pointless fun has been achieved. (For an explanation of just what the hell I’m talking about, please see last year’s wrap-up, found here. Extensive results from last year can be found here.)

This year we switched from drafting one film each for 15 pre-selected directors (+ one wildcard film for each decade from 1970’s-2010’s) to one film each for 15 actors, chosen just prior to the draft (no wildcards this time). The actors chosen were: Amy Adams, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchette, Diane Keaton, Dustin Hoffman, Ian McKellan, Johnny Depp, Julianne Moore, Kate Winslet, Meryl Streep, Robert DeNiro, Samuel L. Jackson, Sean Connery, Sigourney Weaver, Tom Hanks.

One other change this year was that we agreed before the draft that we would scrap the Metacritic portion because it’s really difficult to get scores for films before 1990 on that website. As it turns out we didn’t draft too many films that didn’t have one though, and since IMDB was nice enough to link to them right on a film’s main page, I grabbed them anyway. Only 15 (of 135) films had no Metacritic score so I gave them each the average of all the other films (73) and did a secondary scoring with the Metacritic added back in. In changed things immensely (as seen below).

Anyway, on with the actual results!

Based on the system we agreed to before the draft, the winner, and STILLLLLLLLL CHAMPION…

1. 2346 – Gordon Ellis
2. 2573 – Adam Heroux
3. 2596 – Judson Pierce
4. 2753 – David Fisher
5. 2784 – Bill Stambaugh
6. 2898 – Mark Baumhardt
7. 3306 – Eric Linebarger
8. 3523 – Kristen Dattoli
9. 3560 – Michelle Aguillon

So the three newbs finished last, which isn’t shocking since I don’t think they quite understood the concept until we were a few rounds in (that second overall pick really hurt Eric). I expect they’ll do better next time. All credit for my win must go to pulling Platoon out of my ass in the 13th round, as it wound up the 13th ranked film. Major steal there. Otherwise it’s probably somebody else in the winner’s circle. On that note…

If we add in the Metacritic scores, we get decidedly different results, including a new overall winner…

1. 3101 – Judson Pierce
2. 3180 – Gordon Ellis
3. 3589 – Adam Heroux
4. 3887 – Bill Stambaugh
5. 3950 – David Fisher
6. 4026 – Mark Baumhardt
7. 4441 – Kristen Dattoli
8. 4459 – Eric Linebarger
9. 4521 – Michelle Aguillon

But since we agreed to the new rules ahead of time (and let’s face it, nobody wants to live in a world where Jud is the winner), I RETAIN MY TITLE!!

Thanks, all! See you all next year (or this winter if we get our act together sooner).

~ Gordon
