Fatal Smile – 21st Century Freaks

Released on May 7, 2012 by GMR Music Group/FS Records

Old school guitar metal masquerading as sleaze metal, the guitars lean more towards low-grade Priest than wannabe-Aerosmith, kinda reminding me of Swedish band Denied. Gritty vocals that walk that fine line between singing and shouting, occasionally taking off into airraid siren territory (though not very well). The album’s got plenty of attitude and the songs move along briskly without ever really cutting loose and shredding with reckless abandon (which might have helped). In fact, that’s probably the biggest complaint I can make: the songs never take off. I kept waiting for that blow away solo or super memorable riff, but they never came. Instead it was a steady string of crunch and bang, enjoyable but not memorable. Nice tribute to the recently departed Ronnie James Dio with “For The Last In Line”. Could make me care a little more the next time I spin it if my mood/focus is better, who can say. Otherwise it’s about as 5 as 5 can get.
